PAU, Ludhiana develops two new wheat varieties PBW 887, PBW 927

PBW 877 outperformed top varieties in field trials during 2024-25, 2025-26

Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana has developed two new wheat varieties — PBW 887 and PBW 927.

PBW 887 is suitable for timely sowing in irrigated areas. Its average yield is 24.6 quintals per acre. During fields trials in 2024–25 and 2025–26, PBW 887 produced 1.4% higher yield than PBW 872, 3.8% higher than PBW 826, and 12.5% higher than DBW 222.

PAU scientists say the grains of PBW 887 are bold and attractive, with good weight and excellent overall quality. The average weight of 1,000 grains is 44 grams.

This variety shows moderate resistance to brown rust, yellow rust, and Karnal bunt diseases. PBW 887 contains 40 ppm zinc, 40 ppm iron, and 12% protein.

Its ears emerge in 105 days and the crop is ready for harvest in 155 days. The average plant height is 102 cm. Thanks to its strong stalk; the risk of lodging is very low.

The second new variety, PBW 927, is suitable for rainfed and restricted irrigation conditions. Its grain is visually appealing, with a hectolitre weight of 76.5 kg.

PWB 927 variety is resistant to yellow rust and brown rust diseases. Under limited irrigation, its average yield is 18.5 quintals per acre, while under rainfed conditions it yields 17.5 quintals per acre.

In trials, under restricted irrigation conditions, PBW 927 outperformed PBW 644 by 14.5% and PBW 660 by 12.4%. Under rainfed conditions, it gave 12.3% higher yield than PBW 644 and 5.5% higher than PBW 660.
