IMD has forecast below normal rainfall for July as well

India received 40% below normal rainfall during June 2026. As per the data compiled by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the country received 95 millimetres of rainfall against the normal long-period average (LPA) of 165.3 mm, making it the fifth-driest June since 1901.
Among the four meteorological subdivisions of the country, the rainfall deficit in June is the widest in the central India, which received 84.4 mm rainfall, 50% below the normal of 170.3 mm of the LPA during the month.
India is likely to receive below-normal rainfall in July 2026, with overall precipitation expected to be less than 94% of the LPA of 280.4 mm. The subdued rainfall outlook follows a notably deficient June and is influenced by prevailing weak El Niño conditions in the Pacific.
IMD stated that below-normal rainfall is likely across most parts of the country except some areas of northwest and northeast India, east-central India and the eastern peninsular region where normal to above-normal rainfall is likely.
During July 2026, maximum temperatures are expected to remain above normal across most parts of India except a few isolated areas in west-central India where normal to below-normal maximum temperatures are likely.
Meanwhile, the minimum temperatures are also expected to be above normal over most regions of the country except some isolated pockets of central and northeast India where normal minimum temperatures are likely.
